Scott G. Hawkins Appointed to Florida Supreme Court Workgroup

Jones Foster’s Vice-Chair, Scott G. Hawkins has been appointed by order of the Supreme Court of Florida to The Workgroup on Improved Resolution of Civil Cases. This Workgroup was created pursuant to an administrative order signed by Chief Justice Charles Canady on October 31, 2019, and is established within the Judicial Management Council (“Council”), a focused advisory body that assists the chief justice and the Court. The Council is charged with identifying and evaluating information that would assist in improving the performance and effectiveness of the judicial branch.

Guided by the goals of The Long-Range Strategic Plan for the Florida Judicial Branch 2016-2021, the Workgroup will examine Florida’s laws, rules of court, and practices relating to civil procedure and case management to determine whether changes can be made to increase the fair and timely resolution of more than two million civil case filings managed annually by Florida’s courts.

Scott Hawkins, Past President of the Florida Bar, says of this prestigious appointment, “It is a singular privilege to work with the extraordinary judges and lawyers selected by the Chief Justice to study ways to enhance efficiencies in Florida’s third branch of government. The State of Florida merits a judicial system that promotes the fair and efficient resolution of all civil cases.”

Scott Hawkins is a Florida Bar Board Certified Business Litigation Attorney who focuses his practice on commercial litigation with an emphasis on intellectual property, trade secret disputes, trademark infringement, covenants not to compete, securities, real estate litigation, and claims arising under ERISA Plans. Scott has significant civil and administrative litigation experience, including federal and state law claims and administrative law challenges litigated before the State of Florida Division of Administrative Hearings. He handles regulatory disputes with environmental agencies at all levels, and land use disputes including ERM permitting.

Additionally, Scott regularly serves as an attorney’s fees counsel and expert witness and has been appointed by the courts as a receiver, trustee, statutory investigator (corporate derivative disputes), mediator and special master given his experience, ethics, and judgment.
