Jones Foster Summer Associates Reflect on Their 2026 Program Experience

Jones Foster’s summer associates were offered a firsthand introduction to the practice of law beyond the classroom as part of the firm’s 2026 Summer Associate Program. This year, we welcomed Michael E. Sauer, J.D. candidate at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, and Parker G. Schlichte, J.D. candidate at Stetson University College of Law, for an 11-week experience in the firm’s West Palm Beach office.

From conducting legal research and drafting motions to attending depositions, hearings, and trials, Michael and Parker gained exposure to the many facets of practicing law while receiving guidance and feedback from attorneys across the firm’s six practice groups. Notably, they observed a jury trial that resulted in a $1.43 million verdict in favor of the client, gaining insight into how preparation, strategy, and advocacy come together in the courtroom. Working directly with attorneys at various stages of their careers allowed Michael and Parker to receive valuable mentorship, strengthen their legal skills, and explore areas of law they may pursue after graduation.

Beyond legal work, Michael and Parker formed relationships with colleagues throughout the firm and experienced the collaborative culture that defines Jones Foster. This included a community involvement event through the firm’s Jones Foster Impact program, where they volunteered alongside employees at the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County’s annual Backpack Build.

Jones Foster’s Summer Associate Program is designed to provide rising law students with a meaningful introduction to private practice. By working closely with shareholders, associates, and professional staff, summer associates gain a deeper understanding of a law firm environment while putting their legal education into practice on matters involving real clients.

As they prepare to return to their respective law schools for their final year, Michael and Parker reflect on the experiences, relationships, and lessons that made their summer at Jones Foster a valuable step toward their future legal careers.

How has the program helped prepare you for a future in law?

Having the opportunity to observe how Jones Foster attorneys conduct themselves and interact with others in the office and in the courtroom has been extremely beneficial to my development as an attorney. Their exceptional preparation and professionalism is something I aspire to emulate throughout my legal career. Sitting in on multiple trials this summer gave me the opportunity to observe how the attorneys present themselves in the courtroom and advocate for their clients; the skills and strategies I witnessed are ones I hope to develop and incorporate into my own career.

What aspects of the firm culture or dynamics did you most appreciate during your time with us?

I most appreciated the ability to work with and establish relationships with everyone at the firm, regardless of seniority. At JF, I truly got to know everyone and did assignments for both shareholders and associates. The firm’s collegial atmosphere fostered an environment in which I felt comfortable asking questions and offering my perspective when appropriate. This culture of collaboration not only enhanced my learning experience but also appeared to promote more effective teamwork across the firm.

What advice would you share with other J.D. candidates interested in a summer associate experience?

For other J.D. candidates interested in the Summer Associate Program, I would suggest doing everything you can to make the most out of your experience. Always say “yes” to opportunities and assignments that push you outside your comfort zone or expose you to areas of law you may not have previously considered. Take the time to introduce yourself to everyone at the firm and build meaningful relationships. These are the people you may one day work alongside, and establishing those connections early can be invaluable.
