Jones Foster shareholders participated in The Florida Bar Real Property, Probate and Trust Law (RPPTL) Section’s 2024 Probate Law seminar which gathered new and experienced probate practitioners from across the state to discuss a wide range of estate planning and probate administration material for continuing legal education (CLE) and ethics credits.
Jones Foster Private Wealth and Tax shareholder William G. Smith, LL.M., served as a featured speaker at the annual conference, which took place at the Renaissance Fort Lauderdale Marina Hotel. Bill’s presentation, “Beware of the IRS When Negotiating A Settlement,” identified the various tax consequences that may arise from settlement agreements, including issues pertaining to estate tax, marital deduction, charitable deduction, income tax, gift tax, generation-skipping transfer (“GST”) tax, among others.
Bill Smith, vice chair of Jones Foster’s Corporate & Tax and Private Wealth, Wills, Trusts & Estates teams, concentrates his practice in the areas of estate planning, estate and trust administration, taxation, and transactional corporate law. Utilizing a spectrum of simple to sophisticated strategies, Bill works with individual clients and families to create a customized plan for the current or future transfer of assets to minimize federal gift taxes, estate taxes, and generation-skipping transfer (GST) taxes. He provides counsel to businesses, private foundations, and charities in matters that include business succession planning, transfers of business interests, LLC and S corporation creation, governance documents, mergers, and Treasury Regulation compliance. Bill earned his Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Taxation from the Graduate Tax Program at the University of Florida and is a graduate of the of the Florida Fellows Institute of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC).

Kypreos, who is chair of RPPTL’s Probate Law and Procedure Committee, moderated the event in his role as program co-chair. A fellow of ACTEC, Theo is an experienced trial and appellate attorney who focuses his practice in the areas of probate and trust litigation, trust and estate administration, guardianship law, and fiduciary litigation. He is actively involved in The Florida Bar’s RPPTL Section and is a longtime member of the Executive Council. He frequently lectures at RPPTL events on topics related to probate, trust, and guardianship law, and has authored several articles for its ActionLine Newsletter.
