David E. Bowers Discusses the SECURE Act and the Use of Trusts at ECEPC Virtual Luncheon

Shareholder David E. Bowers, head of Jones Foster’s Corporate & Tax and Private Wealth, Trusts & Estates practice groups, was the featured speaker at the East Coast Estate Planning Council’s first virtual luncheon of the season.

David’s CLE-accredited presentation entitled “Use of Trusts After SECURE” was tailored to the audience of estate and tax planning attorneys, CPAs, CFPs, and trust officers and highlighted key considerations and consequences of The SECURE Act. He offered insight into required minimum distributions; reasons to designate a trust as the beneficiary of a retirement account; who qualifies as an eligible designated beneficiary and related alternative planning options to avoid the 10-year distribution period. He also discussed the tax benefits under the CARES Act and tax treatment of loan amounts forgiven under the Paycheck Protection Program.

David is a Florida Bar Board Certified specialist in Tax with over thirty years’ experience in complex tax, trusts and estates, and business planning with extensive experience in estate planning, pension and profit-sharing plans, non-qualified deferred compensation plans, and business transactions.

David brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership ability to his role as a Florida Tax Institute board member and as chair of the University of Florida Law Center Association’s Alumni Tax Advisory Committee. He served as past chair of The Florida Bar Tax Section, the Palm Beach Tax Institute, and The Florida Bar Tax Law Certification Committee.

Consistently selected by his peers for recognition in his field, David is ranked in Best Lawyers in America and Florida Super Lawyers publications and was the recipient of the 2016 Gerald T.
